Dr. Stern is a member of the ISHRS
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) is a non-profit medical association of over 850 physicians specializing in hair loss. The ISHRS provides continuing education to physicians specializing in hair transplant and restoration surgery and gives the public the latest information on medical hair restoration and non-surgical treatment for hair loss.
A natural, more youthful appearance
Long gone are the days of the old hair “plugs” that often resulted in an obvious, “surgical” look. The newest, microsurgical techniques performed by Dr. Stern result in a natural appearance, reestablishing a more youthful hairline.
These same techniques may also be used to transplant sparse or missing eyebrow hairs or eyelashes as well.
A choice of procedures
There are two often used surgical procedures used to treat male pattern hair loss.
F-U-T
The method most commonly performed is called F-U-T or follicular unit transplantation. F-U-T is commonly known as the “strip” harvesting method. The F-U-T method is the most commonly performed and provides the greatest number of follicular grafts per session.

Dr. Stern also offers F-U-E or follicular unit extraction. You and Dr. Stern may agree that F-U-E is a better method for you if you like to wear your hair short (in a “buzz” cut), as this method alleviates the potential for a visible scar. The F-U-E method also offers a shorter recovery time; and may be beneficial for scar revision or reconstructive purposes.
There’s no shortage of over the counter remedies available in store and online for the treatment of male pattern hair loss. Choosing a hair restoration medication can appear to be overwhelming. Dozens of products are advertised in magazines and online. Some are “herbal”, some are “all natural”, some are pharmaceutical agents, and most are labeled “proven effective”. How do you know which one to choose?
How Do You Know What’s Safe?
It’s safest to choose a product that has been approved for treatment of male pattern baldness by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Approval of a product by the FDA for treatment of hair loss means that the product has been rigorously tested for safety and efficacy in clinical trials that meet FDA standards for study design, number of persons enrolled in the trials, and statistical analysis of study data.
Look for FDA Approval
Only two products have been approved by The FDA for halting hair loss and stimulating hair regrowth:
Rogaine®
Minoxidil (sold under the brand name Rogaine®), a topical agent available over-the-counter, and
Propecia®
Finasteride (sold under the brand name Propecia®), a drug taken by mouth, available only by prescription in the United States.
Hair Restoration can benefit anyone who has experienced permanent hair loss due to:
- Male pattern baldness in men
- Female pattern hair loss in women
- Men or women who want to restore or change the shape of their hairline
