Medical Hair Restoration Explained

No Shortage of “Do it Yourself” Products

When you search the internet, or ask friends about treating hair loss it’s frightening how many “do-it-yourself” hair loss products you’ll find. These heavily marketed creams, ointments, lotions, nutrition supplements, scalp stimulants and other “miracle cures” all promise to stop hair loss and regrow hair.

Among all the medical (non surgical) options for treating pattern hair loss, only two have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and are recommended by Dr. Stern.

Minoxidil (Rogaine®) is applied topically to the scalp in 2% or 5% solution. Minoxidil is available over-the-counter, but is best and most effectively used in a treatment program planned and supervised by Dr. Stern.

Rogaine tends to be more effective in women than in men.

In clinical testing, Men’s ROGAINE® Foam regrew hair in 85% of men after 4 months when used twice daily.*

*In a clinical study (n=352) of twice daily use of Men’s ROGAINE® Foam vs. Placebo.

Finasteride (Propecia®) is medication administered by mouth that influences the response of scalp hair follicles to androgenic hormones. Propecia® is available only for men and only by prescription.
