What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a blend of special chemicals that are applied to the skin to activate the exfoliation process. When removed, it takes away the dead skin to reveal the next layer of skin. While this may sound painful or unpleasant, it is actually a relaxing experience for most of our patients. Dr. Fredric Stern first discusses with patients the conditions they would like to address to determine if a patient is a good fit for chemical peels. Then, the procedure is done right in the office and helps improve the skin’s overall appearance.
What can chemical peels treat?
With chemical peels, patients can slough dead skin cells from the superficial layer and help expose more beautiful, healthier skin underneath. In doing so, patients can address a wide range of conditions that may impact the skin, including:
- Acne and acne scarring
- Age spots/sun spots
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Skin discoloration/hyperpigmentation
- Sun-damaged skin
- Crow’s feet and other signs of aging
Patients with conditions such as rosacea, psoriasis, or eczema should avoid chemical peels as they can aggravate the condition instead of reducing it.
What types of chemical peels are available?
Dr. Fredric Stern is happy to offer a range of different strengths of chemical peels from superficial to deep. The deeper the peel, the more dramatic the results. Common ingredients used for chemical peels include:
- TCA
- Glycolic acid
- Lactic acid
- Salicylic acid
